try this if you’re feeling stuck
In 2019 my husband and I decided we needed to move. We felt disconnected from our community, we were unhappy with our living situation, and we were spending way too much money on rent.
As we sat down to think about where we would like to move to, we bumped up against a really frustrating truth:
We didn’t know what problem we were trying to solve.
Did we need to save money?
Did we want to live in a more spacious home?
Did we want to make new friends?
Yes to all of this.
And also, we had decided we needed to move without truly understanding WHY.
Anytime you’re faced with a big life decision or question, it’s vital that you step back and consider what problem you’re trying to solve.
Because what if we’d decided that we needed to move, and so we did – only to discover that the real problem wasn’t our living situation, but actually something else?
I see this all the time in the conversations I have with coaching clients.
They come into coaching thinking they need a new job, for example… only to realize that the true problem is something else:
I dislike my manager.
I don’t feel respected.
I am not learning or being challenged.
I want to make more money.
I want to feel engaged and energized by my work.
For all of these problems, getting a new job could be one potential solution. But there are likely many more!
And we wouldn’t have seen those options, those possibilities, if we hadn’t stepped back to vet the actual problem.
To make sure we were solving the RIGHT problem.
You can’t get to the right solution without knowing the right problem to solve.
That’s why this week I’m sharing my all-time favorite method to help you get to the RIGHT problem.
