How to get out of your own way
“I have to stop doing the things I know don’t work for me.”
This is what I wrote in my journal last Wednesday night.
The day had taken a lot out of me. After 5+ hours on video, cooking dinner, walking the dog (twice!) and managing bedtime for my kiddo – I collapsed on the couch, unable to even pretend to be interested in connecting with my husband.
I was spent.
And I’d done it to myself.
That’s because I’ve known for a while that I max out at 4 Zoom calls per day. In truth, even four is a stretch for me.
So why did I say yes to more than that?
Honestly, this question stings. A lot.
I spend almost every day guiding my clients to uncover the truth of who they are and what they want, and supporting them to protect and nurture that.
And yet, sometimes even I struggle to do it for myself.
In reality there are all sorts of moments where we get in our own way.
When we say yes to something or someone that doesn’t feel right.
When we say no to something or someone (likely ourselves) that does.
If the first step to change is noticing that today’s reality isn’t working…
…then the next step to change is getting out of our own way.
But how?
In truth it’s not a linear path, but rather a recipe with many ingredients:
Mindset: What do I believe about myself and my worth?
Action: What am I willing to do – or even risk – to change my situation?
Accountability: Who or what can help me stay on track with the goals that are important to me?
This is why I love coaching. Because it means you don’t have to rely on sheer willpower or “self-study” personal development.
It means you get to have support.
You get to ease into a creative, generative space and imagine new ways forward.
You get to have a partner in your journey, and stop going it alone.
It can be hard to get out of our own way – I know from personal experience.
But it’s how authentic change actually happens.
So why not do it in a way that feels supportive, not stressful?
This is the last week to submit your interest form and explore how coaching with me can help you create the authentic change you desire for yourself.
Onward,
