Finding Our Center of Gravity

I’m not exactly sure how it’s almost Thanksgiving… but as temps drop and leaves fall, it certainly seems the end of the year will be upon us soon.

This is the time of year when I start to get a little cranky.

My working hypothesis is that it’s because it feels like my attention is being pulled in two different directions:

On the one hand, my focus is on slowing down, reflecting, closing up and hibernating for the holidays.

On the other – I feel pulled, almost like a magnetic string attached to my body, into the new year. Or, maybe it’s feeling pushed – like go, go, go on goals, plans, strategies and action.

Either way, this is a time where it’s easy to lose our center of gravity.

If you’re feeling this way – or the people in your life (partners, friends, colleagues and peers) are feeling this way – I want you to first know you’re in good company.

It’s perfectly normal to feel off-balance this time of year (for lots of reasons) – and I’ve come to see this is especially true for those of us who yearn to make some kind of career change or pivot in the new year, but feel overwhelmed by the prospect of getting started.

When I feel overwhelmed, I always return to my values.

Values are the solid ground we want and need to stand on when considering change in our lives. They are our operating instructions,  user manual, and personal compass – all rolled into one.

And when we can tune into them, feel their resonance, and follow their guidance, the path to clarity and action crystallizes.

Which values do you want to lean on as you close out 2023 and move into 2024?

To get started, I invite you to download my free training, Goodbye Overwhelm, Hello Clarity: Use Your Values to Chart your Course.

And if you know someone who’s also grappling with these questions, I hope you’ll forward this email to them and share this free resource with them, too!

A few days ago I was at a panel and one of the speakers was reflecting on how she makes decisions in her career and life. She said she asks herself:

“What am I optimizing for at this stage of my life?”

Talk about a powerful question. And I guarantee that your answer – one that is totally unique to you – is found within an exploration of your values.

Cheers to that!

Onward,
