It’s Time to Set Sail

Hello, Wayfinder.

That’s right – I called you a Wayfinder. I am one, too.

Wayfinding is a term that refers to the ancient art of navigating the open ocean.

  • Before there was GPS – there were the stars.

  • Before there were maps – there were ocean currents, the position of the sun and the moon, and the wind on your skin.

  • Before there were any navigational instruments at all – there was your intuition.
The phrase ‘Creative Wayfinding’ came to me (on a red eye flight!) during one of the loneliest, most confusing moments in my life. And it was so meaningful that I made it the core – and name – of my business.

For most of us, the experience of Creative Wayfinding – of finding our way through work and life – feels incredibly isolating.

Filled with self-doubts, questions, and inner chatter, we feel lost at sea in our own tiny dingy, with only a splintered oar and our fear to keep us company.

What I’ve learned, though, is that the act of Creative Wayfinding is perhaps one of the most universal human experiences. It’s something that binds us all.

We are actually all Wayfinders.

Now this doesn’t mean that wayfinding is easy, or that it feels comfortable.

It requires Risk. Bravery. Creativity. Honesty. Support.

It requires you to move beyond what feels comfortable or natural. To explore beyond the limits that the world and the people around you have set for you.

It requires you to expand your range and stretch beyond your current octave.

But it’s not just bravery for bravery’s sake.

It’s because you can feel that you’re meant for more.

Because you can’t waste one more minute working and living in ways that aren’t aligned with your values.

Because you can’t waste one more ounce of your potential on the wrong goals and metrics.

Creative Wayfinding, as I’ve come to learn, is the bravest, boldest, most important, most authentic, most generous thing you can do for yourself – and for the world.

Because when you decide to courageously climb into your boat and push off from the shore…

When you pick up your head and spot the horizon laid out in front of you…

What you’ll notice is that you’re surrounded by other Wayfinders, all in their own boats, right alongside you.

On this journey with you. Next to you.

Some of them have set sail before you, and you can look to them for inspiration and guidance.

And some of them are waiting for you to go first, ready to learn and benefit from your wisdom.

We’re all rowing together.

Today, I invite you to consider the following reflection questions:

  1. Where in my work or life am I feeling called to be more brave, more honest or more authentic?

  2. What’s one wish I hold for myself as I prepare to ‘set sail’ on my Wayfinding journey?

  3. What’s one form of support (a friend, a coach, a plan, a specific resource, etc) that could help me get started?

Onward,

PS: I have two spots open for Wayfinders who are ready to kick start their career change in the next four weeks. Submit your interest form to learn more about how the Coaching Strategy Intensive can help you achieve your goals – with a lot more support and in a lot less time than if you tried to do it alone!
