Friday Finds – December 15, 2017

Friday Finds_12.15.17.jpg

Weekends are a great time to clear space and make room for new inspirations and insights to emerge. To spark your own exploration this weekend, here’s what we’ve enjoyed this week:

WHAT WE’RE READING: To be courageous is to stay close to the way we are made.
WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO: A fascinating and fun deep-dive into the making of a startup. In five days. On a bus. Day One is here.
WHAT WE’RE PLAYING WITH: Whether it’s a sleep vacation or a digital detox, we all about disconnecting this holiday season.
WHAT WE’RE CURIOUS ABOUT: How to transition into doing work we love that also pays our bills (what a concept!)
THIS WEEK’S MANTRA: “Don’t water the weeds”

On a podcast this week, I listened to scientist Sigrid Veasey talk about sleep as a time when the brain ‘takes out the trash’ – getting rid of the useless information, trivial to-dos and other unimportant stuff we don’t need anymore. If our brains are smart enough to do that when we sleep, how might we take time to actively do this when we’re awake?

Much like watering weeds, doing a bit of housekeeping to evaluate our beliefs, behaviors, routines and habits is a very useful practice – one that doesn’t just help keep our lives tidy, but that can also save us countless unnecessary energy and angst.

In this week’s blog post, I share more about questioning the beliefs we carry and how the simple act of questioning them can be a first step toward deciding if they’re flowering blooms or weeds that should be pulled. This weekend, take time to consider the beliefs and decisions you’re holding on to, and perhaps just pause to consider why you believe them or what might happen if you took a different path. Maybe nothing changes, maybe everything does. Who knows until you try it.

Speaking of pressing pause, this will be our last Friday Finds edition of 2017. It’s been a wild 2017 and I’m so thrilled and appreciative that you’re along for the ride. I’ve got lots of plans for the year ahead, and I want to make sure everything I do is useful, inspiring and energizing. So, what big questions or decisions are on your horizon in 2018? Drop me a line and let me know – I’d love to hear from you.

There’s no better time than now, this moment as we transition between years, to make space for courage – to dream about our future and put a plan in action. As poet David Whyte says,

"Courage is the measure of our heartfelt participation with life, with another, with a community, a work; a future. To be courageous is not necessarily to go anywhere or do anything except to make conscious those things we already feel deeply and then to live through the unending vulnerabilities of those consequences."

In the meantime, I wish you a joyous, restful, and courageous holiday season.
