THIS WEEK’S MANTRA: You can’t change the wind, but you can adjust your sails.

Ever have that feeling that you’re banging your fist against a closed door, trying to get in or get going – only to realize there’s a window off to the side that’s been blown wide open?

Lately I’ve been feeling this intense need to define and characterize the transition I’m going through. Like, if I can only give it a name, it’ll somehow make more sense to me (and, who am I kidding - to other people). The problem is that every time I seem to figure out my plan, something new or unexpected comes my way – and suddenly that plan goes out the window.

After weeks of spinning my wheels and feeling paralyzed by all this anxious sense-making, I decided to let it go. No, I may not exactly know what I’m doing now, let alone where this will all head in a year. But are there interesting projects, inspiring new teammates, and meaningful work ahead of me? Absolutely. So, instead of fretting over what it all means or what to call it, I’m focusing more on just getting going.

We can’t change the wind, but we can adjust our sails. If the wind’s blowing a side window wide open, why not climb through it? Sure, it’s a bit messier and more awkward than walking through the door, but it still gets you going, right? And isn’t that what we all want in the end?

Let’s get going,
